SCAT

Scat is a non verbal language of improvised vocal sounds often used in jazz. It incorporates specific rhythmic, scalic, harmonic and articulated syllabic elements that need to be used in a particular way in order to be authentic in feel. In this class we will look at the elements that are required to acquire both the feel and basic vocabulary for scat singing over jazz songs. We will look at swing 8ths versus straight 8ths, following a basic jazz chord progression focussing particularly on the bass line, in order to be able to improvise in a structured way. We will also look at scales and modes and scat syllables often used by scat singers. There will be plenty of practice passing the scat round in a circle making for a fun and very practical class.
